HELP's progress report for the year 2013

1.  We have completed our SATHKARA education program successfully. And our children got vacation for 2 weeks from 14th December.

2.  We held a New Year festival in April for Sathkara children with 15 cultural competitions  for children and their parents.

3. HELP helped to arrange a new year festival and a cricket tournament in April for young people in Dolahena, Aggona and Galkaduwa.

4. HELP participated with organizing the Wesak festival in May.

5. We carried on Dengue prevention activities throughout the year with the help of Grama Niladari (village headman, officer at lowest level of local government), officers from MOH (Ministry of Health) office and Sathkara children. We went from house to house and checked whether the families keep the surrounding clean. Young people were most helpful for this process and they were helping families by cleaning the environment and instructing them how to prevent mosquito breeding. Niladaris often instructed about legal action which can be taken if people neglect the cleaning process.

Dengue is still rare in Horana area, but the epidemic may spread because of people who are travelling to Colombo and other dengue-infested areas.

6. Road cleaning and tree planting activities were held on the World Environment day and the World Children`s day.

7. We held the annual Sathkara cultural festival with the help of Asbjorn Tufto`s family and performances were presented from both countries. Sathkara children got gifts after the festival was over.

8. HELP arranged several meetings with local authorities and the people in Dolahena, Aggona and Wewala to develop the basic needs of the area and organized several shramadanas to clean roads and plant trees. Meetings with the local authorities are not very successful always because of their political solution often make the boarders and divide the people.

9. We held eight workshops on Drama, Music, Dancing and Art for the Sathkara children with the help of the students of the Sri Palee campus, teachers and professionals.

10. The “BRUBYGGING” bridge  was built to honour Hans Petter Hanssen’s many years of commitment to development education and folk high school pedagogy.  The bridge monument  was inaugurated on the same day of the Sathkara cultural festival.

11. We started to expand the HELP building in May 2013, but could not complete the first floor yet due to financial constraints. Nor can we use the ground floor rooms yet because they were not finished yet.
